Volunteering and Pro Bono

As a small organisation, PLS relies heavily on our volunteers and our generous supporters. We currently have two main volunteering initiatives:

Mail Clinic

Owing to communication barriers faced by people in prison, a substantial amount of mail is sent to PLS seeking legal advice on a range of different issues. The Mail Clinic was established in 2020, and involves volunteer law students, under the supervision of volunteer lawyers, sourcing relevant online legal information in response to mail enquiries received.

Community Call Back

Many people in prison experiencing particular disadvantage may not be able to reach out for help and often heavily on their support networks to obtain access to services. Our Community Call Back service is operated by volunteer lawyers and operates to provide information to people who contact PLS seeking assistance on behalf of their friends or family members in prison.

PLS also receives support from private firms with fundraising initiatives, secondments, and pro bono litigation work.

If you are interested in volunteering with PLS, or providing support to PLS in other ways, please email us at [email protected].

Donations

You can support PLS’ activities by making a donation. PLS is an incorporated association (IA30188) and Public Benevolent Institution with endorsement by the Australian Taxation Office as a deductible gift recipient.

PLS is also recognised by the ATO as an income tax exempt charitable entity and is registered as a charity under the Collections Act 1966 (Qld) (CHR1796). Donations of $2.00 or more are tax deductible, as PLS is a DGR.

Upon receipt of your donation, we will email a receipt to you. We thank you for your support and generosity.

If you would like to make a contribution, please contact us at [email protected] for details.

PLS acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture. We pay our respects to Elders, past and present, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded in Australia.
